There was a gulf in class between the two teams and it was only a matter of time before the goals would flow. Leeds were content to maintain the same team throughout the match the only exception being the introduction of Michael Bridges at Inside Right for Alan Smith in the sixty-third minute. United were up against a couple of former players in Scott Sellars and Clyde Wijnhard, but neither would have been able to force their way into the Leeds squad. Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink opened to scoring in the fortieth minute and that was the score at the break and after Alan Smith had made it two seven minutes after the interval and Harry Kewell made it three a minute later as the floodgates started to open. It was the introduction of Michael Bridges that provided the further impetus required and he was involved in both the remaining two goals as Hasselbaink got his second three minutes after Bridge's arrival and Harry Kewell rounded off the scoring in the eighty-fourth minute. Paul Robinson, Alf-Inge Haaland, Martin Hiden, Gary Kelly and Matthew Jones all remained on the bench as unused substitutes. For Huddersfield, Chris Beech replaced Barry Horne in midfield after 52 minutes, Ben Thornley replaced Scott Sellars on the wing after sixty-six minutes and Wayne Allison came on for Clyde Wijnhard as a striker after seventy-seven minutes. Referee: Uriah Rennie (Sheffield)
